Malang, Indonesia — The name Prof. Ir. Herry S. Utomo, MS, PhD, is now recorded in the history of world food innovation. This son of Malang successfully achieved a permanent professor position at Louisiana State University (LSU), United States, while creating Cahokia Rice, the world’s first high-protein rice variety.
Journey to World Achievement
“I never imagined I could achieve a permanent professor title at an American state university. I achieved all of this through a long process not just about intelligence, but perseverance, character, and commitment to keep developing. This position is a form of responsibility, not merely prestige,” said Prof. Herry.
He emphasized that every knowledge mastered must provide real benefits. “I always believe that every knowledge must be returned to society. Knowledge that only stops at journals is not enough. There must be beneficial value that can be felt by many people, especially for our own nation,” he continued.
Cahokia Rice Excellence
Cahokia Rice developed by Prof. Herry through natural mutation (non-GMO) has 50 percent higher protein content compared to regular rice varieties, low glycemic index, and is safe for consumption by diabetes patients. Additionally, this variety also has high productivity and disease resistance.
Impact on Global Food Security
This innovation is not only a scientific achievement, but also opens great opportunities for food security and nutritional improvement in various countries, including Indonesia. With development potential in the homeland, Cahokia Rice can become one of the solutions to increase people’s protein intake while supporting national health.
