More Than Just a Place for Coffee: Turkey’s Oldest Café That Has Funded Education for Centuries
When discussing coffee culture in Turkey, many immediately think of Turkish coffee, which has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. However, long before coffee culture became widespread globally, the Ottoman Empire already boasted coffeehouses that served not only as gathering spots but also as sources of funding for education and social activities. Tahmis Kahvesi is located in the city of Gaziantep, in southeastern Turkey. It is situated in the historic Şahinbey district, right next to Zincirli Bedesten—a historic market dating back to the Ottoman era. This area serves as a hub for historical and culinary tourism in Gaziantep. Some interesting facts: 📅 Established: In 1638 by Mustafa Ağa. ☕ The name "Tahmis": Derived from a word meaning to grind or roast coffee, as the building was originally used for grinding coffee beans. 🕌 Original function: It operated as a productive *waqf* (endowment), where profits from the coffeehouse were used to fund educational and religious activities. 🔥 Fire damage: It was later rebuilt by Sheikh Mehmet Münip Efendi and once again designated as an endowment. 👴 Still in operation: This makes it one of the oldest coffeehouses in Turkey that continues to serve visitors today.

What documents need to be processed in the country of birth, at the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) or Consulate General (KJRI), and upon returning to Indonesia? These questions frequently arise, especially for Indonesian couples living or working abroad.
