Europe is facing an extreme heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in several countries. The WHO reported over 1,300 deaths attributed to the heatwave that struck Europe in June 2026. Temperatures in a number of countries—including France, Spain, and Germany—surpassed 40°C.
The following is a list of the six hottest countries in June 2026, according to the BBC and the Times of India:
- France: 43.8°C
- Spain: 42.7°C
- Germany: 41.7°C
- Czech Republic: 41.1°C
- Hungary: 40.7°C
- Poland: 40.5°C
This phenomenon is driven by climate change and the "heat dome" effect, which traps hot air near the Earth's surface. The WHO has urged all nations to adopt specific strategies to protect the public from the risks associated with extreme weather.
Furthermore, this unusual heatwave has sparked panic across several European countries. Residents have flocked to electronics stores to purchase air conditioners and fans, with some locations reporting stock shortages due to high demand.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified Europe as the region warming the fastest globally—at nearly twice the rate of the global average. Scientists warn that heatwaves arriving earlier, lasting longer, and intensifying in severity are tangible consequences of climate change.
The WHO is currently working with its member states to strengthen health system preparedness, prevention, and response regarding heatwave threats, including advocating for the implementation of extreme-heat health action plans across Europe.
