Muhammadiyah Becomes the First Indonesian Organization to Join the Muslim Council of Britain

Muhammadiyah has once again achieved success on the international stage. History was made in the United Kingdom when the Muhammadiyah Special Branch (PCIM) for the UK and Ireland was officially accepted as a member of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB).

This membership marks a significant milestone for Muhammadiyah in expanding its dakwah (missionary) network and strengthening international cooperation, while also introducing the concept of "Progressive Islam" (Islam Berkemajuan) to the global community.

Verification Process Underway Since June 2026

This membership was not obtained overnight. The PCIM UK and Ireland underwent a verification process starting in June 2026, involving a series of discussions with The East London Mosque, a key partner of the MCB.

As a result, on July 21, 2026, the PCIM officially received notification that its application had been approved.

Representing Indonesia

Historically, MCB membership has largely consisted of Muslim organizations from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh.

Muhammadiyah’s admission serves as a significant representation of Indonesia within the British Muslim community. Beyond showcasing Indonesia as the nation with the world's largest Muslim population, Muhammadiyah also brings the values of "Progressive Islam"—a hallmark of the organization—to the forefront.

Positive Impact for Muhammadiyah

Joining the MCB offers Muhammadiyah various benefits, including:

  • strengthening the organization's legitimacy in the UK,
  • expanding international cooperation networks,
  • increasing participation in strategic forums,
  • strengthening interfaith dialogue,
  • and introducing the face of Indonesian Islam to the global community.

This achievement demonstrates that Muhammadiyah’s contributions are not only beneficial within Indonesia but are also gaining trust and recognition on the international stage.

The broader Muhammadiyah’s global network becomes, the greater the opportunity to disseminate Islamic values that are moderate, inclusive, and conducive to the well-being of the global community.
