Request an appointment by emailLegalization — Apostille: Since 4 June 2022, Indonesian public documents intended for use abroad require an Apostille from the Directorate of Central Authority and International Law at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (https://apostille.ahu.go.id) and no longer require legalization. Conversely, public documents issued by the Austrian and Slovenian authorities no longer need to be legalized by the Embassy in Vienna, but require an Apostille from the competent Austrian or Slovenian authority; documents in the local language must be translated into English by a sworn translator. Business documents to be used in Indonesia are not yet covered by the Apostille regime and must still be legalized by the Embassy, at €125 per document with a three-working-day processing time.

I have just arrived in Austria or Slovenia — what is the first thing I need to do?
Every Indonesian citizen residing abroad is required to report their whereabouts, any change of address, their residence permit status and other important events (birth, marriage, divorce, death) to the local authorities and/or the Indonesian mission (Article 4, Law No. 23/2006). If you intend to stay more than 5 days in Austria or Slovenia — to study, travel, work or settle — you need to register with the Embassy in Vienna at https://peduliwni.kemlu.go.id
What are a passport and an SPLP, and how do I apply for them?
A passport is the official travel document issued by the Government of Indonesia to citizens travelling abroad. An SPLP (travel document in lieu of a passport) is a temporary replacement issued in specific circumstances, in particular to citizens who have lost their passport; it is valid once only and solely for the return to Indonesia. To apply for a passport, applicants must appear in person at the Embassy in Vienna to submit documents, complete the form and have their biometrics captured. For an SPLP, applicants may come directly with all required documents.
When can a passport be replaced?
When the remaining validity is less than 6 months, the pages are full, or the passport is damaged or lost.
Can a passport be renewed while more than 6 months of validity remain?
Yes, for specific purposes or circumstances. If the renewal is needed to obtain or extend a residence permit, the applicant must attach a letter from the local authorities stating that the residence permit is tied to the passport's validity.
What should I do if my passport is lost or damaged?
If the passport is lost, the applicant must obtain a loss report from the police or the Lost & Found office. If the passport is damaged, the applicant should first consult the Embassy for verification at [email protected].
Must the applicant appear in person at the Embassy, and must supporting documents be submitted in physical form?
Yes. Passport documents must be submitted physically, as they are scanned into the immigration system and kept in the Embassy's records. All applicants must appear in person, including infants and children, to submit documents and have their biometric data captured (photograph and fingerprints).
Does the Embassy issue electronic passports?
No. The Embassy issues only standard 48-page passports.
How long is a new passport valid?
Indonesian passports issued by the Embassy in Vienna are valid for 5 years; for children with dual nationality validity runs at most until the age of 21.
How are passport fees paid?
Cashless only, by card at the consular counter.
How long does passport processing take?
Up to 4 working days after the biometric capture.
Can the passport be sent by post?
Yes, using a pre-paid postal service. The cost and the risk of damage or loss are borne by the applicant.
Is the old passport returned?
Yes, it is returned once the new passport has been issued.
Can a foreign national who was formerly an Indonesian citizen still obtain an Indonesian passport?
No. Anyone who has renounced or lost Indonesian citizenship must return their Indonesian passport and report the renunciation or loss at https://kewarganegaraan.ahu.go.id/
Can an SPLP be used to travel to another country?
No. An SPLP is valid once only and solely for the return to Indonesia.
