The Yogyakarta-based puppet theater group, Papermoon Puppet Theatre, has once again brought honor to Indonesia on the international stage. During their performance at the prestigious Theater der Welt 2026 performing arts festival in Chemnitz, they received a standing ovation lasting over ten minutes.
This achievement was particularly special given that local crew members had previously noted that German audiences are not known for easily giving standing ovations. Yet, as the performance concluded, hundreds of audience members rose to their feet, offering prolonged applause in appreciation of the work presented.
Papermoon Puppet Theatre was founded in 2006 by Maria Tri Sulistyani and Iwan Effendi. Based in Yogyakarta, the group is renowned for puppet theater performances that blend visual art, music, movement, and compelling storytelling. Over nearly two decades of creative work, they have produced more than 30 shows and toured extensively across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the United States. They also organize Pesta Boneka, an international puppet festival held regularly in Yogyakarta.
At Theater der Welt 2026, Papermoon presented a work titled Stream of Memory. This dialogue-free performance relied on the power of visuals, puppet expressions, music, and movement to convey emotions to a cross-cultural audience. This approach captivated the German public, eliciting an extraordinary response in the form of a standing ovation that lasted more than ten minutes.
This success serves as proof that Indonesian artistic works can transcend language and cultural barriers. Papermoon Puppet Theatre has once again demonstrated that the creativity and quality of Indonesian artists can compete on the global stage and earn recognition from international audiences.
