National Prayer Gathering at Monas Officially Kicks Off 81st Anniversary Celebrations of the Republic of Indonesia; Attended by Over 100,000 Worshippers

Jakarta – An atmosphere of solemnity enveloped the National Monument (Monas) area in Jakarta on the evening of Saturday, August 1, 2026. More than 100,000 congregants attended the National Dhikr (remembrance of God) and Prayer gathering, an event organized by the government to kick off the series of commemorations for the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia's independence.

In his remarks, Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar urged the public to view the independence commemoration not merely as an annual ceremony, but as a moment to strengthen spiritual endeavors, improve moral character, and uphold national unity amidst diversity.

One of the most moving moments was the recitation of a national prayer by six religious leaders representing Islam, Protestant Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Differences in faith posed no barrier to collectively seeking blessings for Indonesia.

In addition to members of the public from various regions, the event was attended by ministers of the Red and White Cabinet. The government hopes that this National Dhikr and Prayer gathering serves as a reminder that Indonesia's independence must be safeguarded through unity, tolerance, the spirit of mutual cooperation (gotong royong), and gratitude to God Almighty.
