Isra and Miraj: Remembering the Night Journey and the Importance of Prayer

Isra and Miraj is one of the most magnificent events in Islamic history. Each year, Muslims in Indonesia and around the world remember it as a moment to renew their faith and strengthen their bond with prayer. It is commonly commemorated on the 27th night of the month of Rajab, although the exact date may differ according to scholarly opinions and the traditions of each country.

For Indonesians living far from their homeland, remembering Isra and Miraj is also a way to strengthen brotherhood and preserve Islamic values within the diaspora.

What Is Isra and Miraj?

Isra and Miraj consists of two events that took place in a single night. Isra is the journey of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from the Sacred Mosque (Masjidil Haram) in Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque (Masjidil Aqsa) in Jerusalem. Miraj is his ascension from the Al-Aqsa Mosque through the heavens to the highest station willed by Allah.

This extraordinary event came after the Prophet (peace be upon him) had endured a period of great hardship, including the loss of loved ones and the rejection he faced. For this reason, Isra and Miraj is also understood as a form of comfort and strengthening from Allah to His Messenger.

The Ordaining of the Five Daily Prayers

The most important outcome of Isra and Miraj was the ordaining of the five daily prayers. It was during the Miraj that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) received the command to pray directly from Allah. This is what gives prayer its special status, for it was commanded without an intermediary, unlike other acts of worship.

For this reason, prayer is often called the miraj of the believer, the means by which the soul ascends to commune with Allah. Each time a Muslim performs the prayer, it is as if he relives the profound meaning contained in the event of the Miraj.

The Importance and Benefits of Prayer

Prayer is one of the five pillars of Islam and the pillar of the religion. Performed five times a day, prayer maintains a continuous connection between a servant and his Creator.

Among the meanings and benefits of prayer are:

  • A connection with Allah. Prayer is the moment a servant speaks directly to his Lord, seeking forgiveness and help.
  • Building discipline. The regular times of prayer train order and an awareness of time.
  • Peace of heart. In prayer, a Muslim finds calm and tranquility amid the busyness of life.
  • A reminder and a safeguard. Prayer performed properly helps keep one away from indecency and wrongdoing.

Lessons from Isra and Miraj

There are many lessons to draw from Isra and Miraj. First, the importance of renewing faith and conviction in the power of Allah. Second, earnestness in safeguarding prayer as the most precious gift of this event.

Third, a lesson in patience. Isra and Miraj came after a period full of difficulty, teaching that ease and relief follow patience. Fourth, the honor of the Al-Aqsa Mosque as one of the holy sites of Islam, deserving of care and respect.

Conclusion

Isra and Miraj is not merely an event to be remembered once a year, but a reminder of the lofty place of prayer in the life of a Muslim. May this commemoration nurture a renewed determination to safeguard the five daily prayers, to renew our faith, and to follow the patience and steadfastness of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the face of life's trials.
