How to Renew an Indonesian Passport Abroad

How to Renew an Indonesian Passport Abroad

For Indonesian citizens (WNI) living, working, or studying abroad, a passport is a crucial document. If your passport is nearing its expiration date, you do not need to return to Indonesia to handle the renewal. Passport replacement can be processed through the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) or the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in your country of residence.

Note: Officially, the term used is "passport replacement" rather than "passport extension," as you will receive a brand-new passport booklet.

When Should the Passport Be Replaced?

It is advisable to apply for a replacement when your passport has approximately six months of validity remaining. Many countries require a passport to be valid for at least six months upon entry into their territory.

Requirements for Replacing an Indonesian Passport Abroad

Commonly required documents include:

  • Old passport.
  • Biometric photo.
  • Indonesian ID card (KTP).
  • Family Card (KK).
  • Birth certificate.
  • Local residence permit or visa.
  • Application form from the KBRI/KJRI.
  • Other supporting documents (e.g., marriage certificate or educational diploma).

Each KBRI or KJRI may have additional requirements. Therefore, always check the official information provided by the Indonesian diplomatic mission in your country of residence before visiting.

How to Process the Passport Replacement

  1. Prepare all required documents.
  2. Register or schedule an appointment if required by the KBRI/KJRI.
  3. Visit at the scheduled time for document verification, photo capture, fingerprinting, and an interview (if necessary).
  4. Make the payment in accordance with regulations.
  5. Wait for the new passport to be issued, then collect it or receive it via the service provided by the KBRI/KJRI.

What Is the Cost?

Passport fees follow Indonesian government regulations; however, payments made abroad are usually adjusted to the local currency based on the specific rules of the Indonesian diplomatic mission. Therefore, please check the latest rates on the official website of your local KBRI or KJRI. ## If Your Passport Is Lost Abroad

If your passport is lost:

  • Immediately report the loss to the local police.
  • Contact the nearest Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) or Consulate General (KJRI).
  • Follow the established procedures for obtaining a travel document or a replacement passport.

Tips for a Smoother Process

  • Do not wait until your passport actually expires.
  • Ensure the personal details in your passport are up to date.
  • Keep a digital copy of your passport on your phone or in cloud storage.
  • Register your presence with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate General to facilitate access to consular services.
